Your IP camera connects fine. Is the stream actually healthy?

Every IP camera "works" when you open it in a player. The stream connects, a picture shows up, everyone moves on. Then the recorder has gaps, the analytics box misses frames, or the "live" view turns out to be a frozen picture from an hour ago — and nothing in your tooling can tell you which property of the stream is broken, because "it connects" was the only test. I added an rtsp command to RK…

IP cameras appear to function correctly when opened in a player, with a picture displaying seamlessly. However, issues can arise that remain undetected by standard tools – gaps in the recorded footage, missed frames by analytics software, or a live view showing a picture from several hours prior. The underlying problem is that the connection itself is the sole test performed, leaving no indication of any specific aspect of the stream that may be malfunctioning.

To address this, the author has developed a Python-based tool called RK Edge Doctor. This tool treats a camera stream as an acceptance test rather than just a preview, examining multiple critical factors to determine if the stream is healthy, degraded, or broken. The tool assesses reachability, SDP negotiation (including codec, payload, and clock settings), Basic and Digest authentication, time to first frame, frame rate, bitrate, RTP timestamp health, and even performs a decode spot-check for H.264 when OpenCV is available.

The results of the assessment are presented in JSON and HTML formats, enabling easy archiving as acceptance evidence. The tool relies solely on standard Python libraries and does not require FFmpeg or ffprobe, making it compatible with bare board images. Additionally, sensitive information such as passwords embedded in the URL are redacted to prevent the tool from leaking camera credentials into its reports.

RK Edge Doctor has been verified on an RK3588 board, testing various streaming scenarios, including synthetic local streams, UDP, TCP-interleaved streams, and Digest authentication. The tool successfully identified a healthy stream with zero packet loss and a consistent frame rate of 25.0 fps. However, the author's ultimate goal is to obtain reports from real-world cameras, encompassing a wide range of vendors and firmware configurations.

If you have a camera you'd like to test, the tool will generate a JSON report with the credentials redacted, which you can contribute to an issue or share with the community.
