MG approves hybrid HS and flagship QS for South Africa in 2027
Already available in both Australia and the United Kingdom, the new additions will arrive on South African soil next January.
British carmaker MG has announced a new lineup of SUVs for South Africa, set to launch in January 2027. The product rollout includes the HS Hybrid+, HS Super Hybrid, and the all-new QS. The hybrid HS pair, Hybrid+ and Super Hybrid, will be positioned above the existing 1.5-litre Comfort and Luxury models, with pricing starting at R499,900 and R534,900 respectively.
The Hybrid+ is a self-charging hybrid with a 1.83-kWh battery pack and a single electric motor, reducing the combustion engine power from 125kW/275Nm to 105kW/230Nm. This model will become the most affordable hybrid SUV in South Africa, with a combined output of 165kW/340Nm. The Hybrid+ boasts the same dimensions as its petrol counterpart but extends by five millimetres in length to 4,560mm. Its boot space remains unchanged, ranging from 507 to 1,484 litres.
The Super Hybrid, or Super Hybrid, pairs the 1.5-litre engine with a 24.7-kWh battery and a single motor producing 154kW/340Nm. Powered by a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT), the Super Hybrid delivers a combined 220kW/350Nm, making it the flagship SUV in the lineup. Unlike its petrol counterpart, the Super Hybrid has an all-electric range of 120km and lacks DC charging capability, necessitating a four-hour AC charge via the onboard seven-kilowatt charger.
The Super Hybrid is set to take over as the line-up's flagship, positioned above the 2.0-litre Comfort and Luxury models priced from R629,900 to R659,900.
The QS, revealed earlier this year, represents MG's flagship SUV and the first seven-seat model outside India. Based on SAIC's Roewe RX9, the QS will carry a starting price of around R700,000 to R750,000, making it the new top-tier model in MG's lineup. The QS offers a three-row configuration, with a boot capacity of 203 litres when all seven seats are up, and up to 1,052 litres with the second row folded down.
The vehicle features a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, with power and torque upgraded from 170kW/370Nm to 153kW/355Nm. The plug-in hybrid QS, known as the S9 in the UK, shares the same powertrain as the HS Super Hybrid but has a limited electric-only range of 100km.
