I Missed Talking to Strangers, So I Built a Text-Only Chat Site

Some of my best conversations have been with people whose names I never learned. Once, on a long train journey, I started chatting with the person sitting next to me. It began with something small, like where we were going. Then we kept talking for hours about work, family and life. When I got off, I felt lighter. We never swapped numbers, but I still remember that talk. Another evening, I was…

In my recent reporting, I discovered that some of my most memorable conversations have been with individuals I never had the chance to learn their names. For instance, during a lengthy train ride, I struck up a conversation with the passenger beside me that stretched into hours. We discussed various subjects including work, family, and life; and although I never exchanged contact information, the experience remains etched in my memory.

Similarly, during an evening at a local chai stall, a stranger joined me on the same bench and the ensuing conversation, coupled with two cups of tea, transformed an ordinary evening into one I still reflect upon.

These experiences underscored a simple truth: sometimes, opening up to strangers can be liberating. In their company, there's no judgment, history, or pressure. However, trying to recreate this atmosphere online presented numerous challenges. Most platforms demand personal information such as phone numbers, photos, and social media connections before allowing any communication.

Moreover, numerous random chat sites force users into video conversations, which can be intimidating when you're interacting with an unknown person. The proliferation of spam and bots on such platforms further compounded the issue.

Driven by a desire to recreate that safe, open-ended dialogue, I embarked on creating a text-only chat platform. Stricter measures were implemented: no video or voice communication, a streamlined sign-up process requiring only a guest account for immediate usage, and interest-based rooms catering to various categories like city, language, topic, and fandom.

Safety was paramount; users could block or report any misconduct with a single tap, and each report directly reached me. Additionally, random chats were not stored for extended periods to minimize potential misuse.

The platform's development was a solitary endeavor, leveraging AI tools to assist with coding. My primary focus has been to ensure user safety by mitigating spam and bad actors while facilitating easy connections with like-minded individuals. Currently, my efforts are directed towards maintaining these two core objectives: minimizing spam and fostering meaningful interactions.

For those intrigued by the concept, I invite you to explore Stranger Talk at strangertalk.in. Should anything seem amiss, please feel free to share your feedback directly with me; I am committed to reading every message and continuously refining the platform based on user input.
