SeABank unveils Sustainable Finance Framework

SeABank on October 29 announced its Sustainable Finance Framework receiving a Second Party Opinion from S P Global Ratings

SeABank unveils Sustainable Finance Framework

SeABank has unveiled its Sustainable Finance Framework (SFF), a comprehensive blueprint for allocating capital towards the bank's sustainability goals. This framework aligns with six international principles set by various industry associations and organizations, ensuring adherence to established best practices. The SFF operates through four core pillars, governing every stage of the fund's lifecycle: from the use of proceeds to reporting and management.

Funding under this framework will primarily support projects in three main areas: environmental (40-45%), blue (7-15%), and social (40-45%) objectives. These initiatives aim to tackle Vietnam's pressing environmental and social issues, such as emissions, water security, waste management, and pollution, while simultaneously improving access to essential services, housing, and finance for underprivileged communities.

An emphasis is placed on marine biodiversity and ecosystem conservation, marking the bank's pioneering role in "blue" financing.

The SFF introduces specific quantitative criteria, including a minimum 20% improvement in energy savings, emission reduction, or water efficiency. All credit exposures are rigorously screened and evaluated through SeABank's Environmental and Social Management System. These stringent measures are designed to foster accountability and seamlessly integrate sustainable finance into the bank's daily operations.

Building upon its 2025 Green and Blue Bond Framework, which was ICMA-aligned and rated "Medium Green" by S&P Global Ratings, the updated framework now encompasses lending and social objectives under a unified structure. In doing so, SeABank has successfully mobilized nearly $1.1 billion in financing from international institutions, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Norfund, Proparco, FMO, and Development Bank of the Philippines (DFC).

As of September 2026, the outstanding green credit under the SFF has surpassed VND4.1 trillion ($159 million), marking a more than 150% increase since the end of 2025. By 2030, SeABank aims to allocate 5% of its total outstanding loans to green credit and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10% compared to its baseline year. Additionally, the bank intends to expand financial access for vulnerable groups, women-owned businesses, and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises.
