Mumbai: Goregaon's Iconic Topiwala Market To Partially Reopen On November 30 After 8-Year Delay; 206 Shops To Resume Business

Mumbai's renowned Topiwala Market at Goregaon, a historic shopping hub, is finally poised to reopen partially on November 30, marking a significant milestone after an 8-year hiatus due to numerous setbacks. These challenges include contractor changes, construction impediments, legal entanglements, financial constraints and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On a recent review meeting at the P-South ward office, officials revealed that the first two floors, which will accommodate 206 shops, are set for resumption of business on this date. The vendors of the market expressed their relief and gratitude, with MP Ravindra Waikar emphasizing the market's role in supporting vendors' livelihoods and the community's convenience.

He warned the civic administration that they would face accountability if the scheduled opening fails to materialize. However, a senior official from the civic body attributed these delays to the relocation of underground high-tension electricity cables, hard-rock excavation, legal complexities, and the termination of the original contractor's contract.

The BMC is actively working to expedite the project, aiming to complete it before the March 2027 deadline. The redevelopment project, costing Rs. 202 crore, includes 206 shops, 94 on the first floor and 112 on the ground floor, along with 53 residential apartments, an 800-seat auditorium, and parking for 192 vehicles. The rooftop will feature recreational amenities.

Initiated by the Goregaon Market Traders Welfare Association, the project began after the demolition of the old market building and an adjoining theatre in 2018. Despite facing a significant setback when the contractor's contract expired, leading to a fresh tender being issued in 2024, the project's cost has escalated considerably from its initial estimate of Rs. 125.71 crore.
