Google’s first data center satellite is online and writing poetry

Google's prototype space data center satellite is now online, marking a significant step towards future networks of orbiting satellites performing complex tasks. The spacecraft, equipped with a single Google Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) and capable of generating up to 1 kW of electricity, has completed a three-week commissioning process testing its subsystems.

Upon receiving its first command from engineers on the ground, Google's DeepMind model, Gemma 4, was tasked with composing a haiku about space, resulting in the poetic lines: "Blue marble below/Data streams in silent grace/Starlight feeds my core." This test aimed to assess the satellite's communication capabilities and its ability to report on orbital conditions.

The ongoing evaluation will scrutinize the TPU's performance under extreme temperatures and the detrimental effects of radiation on its hardware, a critical factor for satellite operations. If successful, Google plans to launch two additional satellites with enhanced power capabilities in 2027, supporting high-speed optical links between the spacecraft.

This ambitious Starcloud project, spearheaded by Google, stands out among space-based data center initiatives, emphasizing the development of high-speed satellite-to-satellite communication. Google's involvement in space data centers is further bound by its substantial investment in SpaceX, a key partner in launching these orbital data centers.

The venture, known as Suncatcher, is a classic example of Google's moonshot approach, focusing on future-proof infrastructure development. However, the project's timeline and success may hinge on Google's immediate response to the growing influence of AI within its search and advertising business.
