First zero direct emission electric barge operates in Vietnam

CMA CGM, Nike and Gemadept have successfully launched the first electric barge with zero direct emissions in Vietnam, marking a significant milestone in the development of sustainable logistics solutions. The innovative barge, developed by CMA CGM's New Build and research and development teams, incorporates battery technology from CATL and can be recharged in approximately four hours using renewable electricity.

The charging infrastructure is powered by a solar farm located at the terminal, creating an integrated solution that combines low-emission transportation with renewable energy production.

The project, a collaboration between CMA CGM, Nike and Gemadept, demonstrates the potential for replicating similar eco-friendly transport models in other geographies and supply chains. Christine Cabau, executive vice president of Assets and Operations at CMA CGM, emphasized the importance of moving beyond ambition to deliver concrete, scalable solutions.

"This fully electric barge is a powerful example of what can be achieved when shipping companies, customers and terminal operators combine their expertise and commitment," she stated.

Nike's chief sustainability officer, Cimarron Nix, highlighted the necessity of partnerships and innovation in achieving emission reductions across global supply chains. "This project with CMA CGM and Gemadept is a great example of how we can work together to turn innovation into practical solutions that reduce our impact while building a more resilient supply chain," Nix added.

Gemadept's deputy CEO and chairman of Gemalink Deep-Sea Port, Do Cong Khanh, expressed optimism about the future of sustainable logistics in Vietnam. The launch of the electric barge signifies a strong connection between ports, inland waterways and clean energy, with the potential to be expanded and replicated to contribute to the long-term transition towards low-carbon logistics in the country.

The 100% electric barge operates between Nike's inland drop-off location in Ho Chi Minh City and Gemadept's deep-sea terminal in Cai Mep over a 180-kilometre round trip. By transporting over 50,000 TEUs annually, the barge offers a lower-carbon alternative to road transportation for inland cargo movements, supporting Vietnam's growing renewable energy and logistics capabilities.
