When the topic of education arises in conversations, everyone becomes agitated: shortages of teachers, overwhelmed colleagues, outdated curricula, canceled classes, worried parents, overburdened children. There is never a shortage of material for discussion, and the anger unites everyone. However, nothing changes because the problem description unites everyone, but does not lead to any real change.
This sense of powerlessness only increases frustration, and the vicious cycle begins anew. To break it, I have decided more than a decade ago to direct my energy away from framework curricula, education ministries, and federalism towards charitable, scalable educational initiatives in this country that not only complain but also achieve results and make a difference across Germany.
One such initiative that particularly excites me is "Klasse 0". I find it very interesting to consider how a child must feel already on their first day of school, feeling behind the starting line. The others understand the task, I don't. The others feel confident to speak up, I remain silent. School should start with curiosity and joy in learning, not with the feeling of being less capable than others.
