Someone just got the Switch 2's Mario Kart World running on a Mac, and Nintendo probably isn't thrilled

Last week, a developer named Will Faust shared a video of Switch 2-exclusive Mario Kart World running on macOS, revealing that the game can be played natively on Apple's desktop operating system. Faust claims that the footage is genuine and that this project originated from a fork of Nxnative, an application designed to run Switch games on Apple devices.

While the Mario Kart World is still riddled with issues, such as missing shaders, lag, and distorted geometry, it represents a functional version of the game on a Mac. Faust obtained the game by exploiting the ns2jb vulnerability on their Switch 2 and has not decided on whether to further enhance the port's performance or release it publicly.

The recent Switch 2 exploit allows users to extract files from games, but only the full Mario Kart World and a Princess Peach 3D model have been shared so far. Additionally, data from Deltarune and Duskbloods have surfaced. Faust clarifies that this port is not a decompilation or recompilation, but rather a conversion of HOS syscalls to iOS, nvn to Metal, and so on.

The majority of the work to make Mario Kart World functional was already accomplished by Nxnative, with the most challenging aspect being the implementation of NVN2 support. NVN2 is Nintendo's proprietary graphics API for the Switch 2. Nintendo's Switch 2 and Apple's Macs share Arm64-based processors, which means they don't require CPU instruction-set emulation.

Nonetheless, Nintendo's graphics APIs necessitate translation for use on macOS. In other news about PC ports, the Link's Awakening remake for the original Switch has been recompiled, enabling it to run on PC. Moreover, someone has ported Halo: Combat Evolved to Nintendo 64, including a four-player multiplayer feature.
