Rubio joins Trump on campaign trail days before US midterms
US secretary of state Marco Rubio and vice president JD Vance are widely viewed as top contenders to lead the Republican Party in the post-Trump era.
On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio joined President Donald Trump on a campaign trail for the upcoming midterms in Corpus Christi, Texas. This marks a rare appearance for the top US diplomat at a domestic political rally. Trump, referring to Rubio as "so popular," beckoned him to join him at the podium as the enthusiastic crowd chanted his name.
Rubio, the first Hispanic and fluent Spanish speaker to hold the position, is often seen as a potential successor to Trump in the 2028 election. However, he has not yet announced his intentions for the 2028 race. The trip comes as Trump showcases a tanker carrying Venezuelan crude, emphasizing the potential supply for American refineries amid rising gasoline costs.
The president hopes this will alleviate voter concerns about inflation and boost Republican support in the midterms. Rubio, who previously ran for president in 2016, is set to host a G20 foreign ministers meeting in Atlanta.
