In a sensitization program organized by Change a Child Community Initiative in Abuja, an education expert has called for extensive teacher training and retraining to address educational gaps between teachers and students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Aishatu Jafaar Suleiman, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Secondary Education Board Desk Officer for Robotic Education, made the call during the program held at Government Day Secondary School, Dutse Alhaji and Government Secondary School, Kubwa, in the Bwari Area Council.
Suleiman stated that while the administration of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has made impressive strides in renovating schools and providing learning materials and infrastructure, there is still a pressing need for teachers' development. "The government is doing its best, and there has been so much improvement in the renovation of schools and the provision of learning materials, but teachers are in dire need of training," she affirmed.
Suleiman emphasized that they are not asking for an exorbitant amount but for training and retraining to enable teachers to perform at their best.
Highlighting her own commitment to continuous learning, Suleiman revealed that she does not limit her education to what happens within the classroom walls. "Despite not being in the class at the moment, I still train and pay for online courses that I believe will be beneficial to my profession because once a teacher, you're always a teacher," she said.
Blessing Okwuchukwu Awamba, the Founder and Lead Educator of Change a Child Community Initiative, elaborated on the organization's mission. The initiative was born out of the belief that catching school children young and instilling essential values for national development is crucial, given the surge in societal vices. The five-year program, designed for potential expansion to various states, has already identified a few states as beneficiaries.
The themes chosen for the program are all-encompassing and have been meticulously selected to align with the socioeconomic challenges faced in specific geographical locations.
