The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) is encouraging graduates to pursue entrepreneurship and job creation amid the country's persistent graduate unemployment. In the final session of UPSA's 18th Congregation, Vice-Chancellor Professor Kwaku Mensah Mawutor stressed the importance of turning business ideas into thriving enterprises, urging graduates to identify opportunities, develop innovative solutions and establish businesses capable of creating jobs.
"Our responsibility is not only to teach students how to write business plans but to shape them to identify opportunities, develop innovative solutions, establish viable businesses and create jobs," he emphasized.
The Cyber Security Authority's Director-General, Professor Divine Selase Agbeti, echoed this sentiment, urging graduates to consider alternatives to paid employment. He proposed collaboration and innovation as key avenues for graduates to establish themselves in the economy. Agbeti suggested that software development could be a fruitful area for graduates to pool their skills, create products and find customers.
"Three, four, five, six of you can come together and decide to be software developers, develop your software, approach people and I can guarantee you that you will sell your software," he urged.
Graduate Nancy Edem Atsu, who was recognized as the overall best student at UPSA's 18th Congregation, expressed gratitude for her academic achievements. Despite facing difficulties in her studies, Atsu remained determined and persevered, reflecting her commitment to her education. While she is interested in pursuing a career in public relations, Atsu is also exploring the possibility of starting a baking business as another path forward.
Her mother, Madam Bertha, expressed pride in her daughter's accomplishments and thanked God for her success after years of support.
The graduation ceremony marked the culmination of years of hard work for the graduates, who now face the challenge of securing employment, building viable businesses or combining both approaches to achieve their professional aspirations.
