Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has opted to bench captain Bruno Fernandes for their upcoming Premier League match against Bournemouth at Old Trafford. According to sources, Carrick made the decision to bench Fernandes, a 32-year-old, in a bid to rejuvenate the team's performance. Fernandes was substituted after 66 minutes in a prior game against Como.
When asked about the decision, Carrick stated that he would always make the choice that is best for the football club. United goalkeeper Senn Lammens added that the team is united and behind the coach. Fernandes and Carrick reportedly disagreed over the team's tactical approach after a 4-1 Champions League loss to Como, which raised questions about Carrick's future.
Fernandes had previously questioned the decision not to press aggressively, suggesting it allowed Como to gain confidence. This will be Fernandes' first Premier League game since May 4, 2025, when he was substituted in a 4-3 loss at Brentford.
