Rotherham United hand former Manchester United defender Brandon Williams career lifeline following 14-month absence from football

Rotherham United has provided a new opportunity for former Manchester United defender Brandon Williams to return to professional football after a 14-month break from the sport. The 26-year-old defender has signed a short-term contract with the South Yorkshire club following a trial period at their training ground.

Williams, having worked hard throughout pre-season and late October at the club's Roundwood training base, has officially returned to football after proving his fitness to head coach Alex Bruce and director of football Steve McClaren. His last competitive appearance was back in August 2025 during a brief stint with Hull City, while he also played 90 minutes on loan at Ipswich Town in November 2023.

Rotherham's statement confirms the defender's arrival, highlighting his hard work throughout pre-season and late October at the club's Roundwood training base, where he demonstrated his fitness to the coaching staff. Born in Manchester, Williams has an impressive background with appearances in the Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and Premier League, as well as for Norwich City, Ipswich Town, Hull City, and even England's U20 and U21 age groups.

The Millers' manager, Bruce, praised Williams' dedication, praising his commitment to the club even when unpaid. Bruce stated, "He's had to face the reality of that's where his life was at," acknowledging the challenges Williams has faced. The club's director of football, McClaren, also expressed confidence in Williams' potential, stating that he looks much better than when he first arrived for pre-season.

The full-back will wear the number 33 shirt for the Millers and aims to regain competitive match sharpness during Rotherham's upcoming League Two fixtures.
