Lahore Railway Station Gets a Major Upgrade

The Lahore Cantt Railway Station has been upgraded with a computer-based interlocking (CBI) signalling system, which will soon replace the decades-old manual point system at the main Lahore Railway Station. This modernisation, overseen by Railways (PR) Lahore Divisional Superintendent Inamullah Khan, began at Shahdara Station and has since expanded to include Raiwind and Okara Cantt. Khan highlighted that the upgrade at the Cantt Station was given priority due to its complex yard layout.

Pakistan Railways is rolling out the CBI system across its signalling infrastructure to enhance train operations and safety. This system replaces the traditional manual method with computer-controlled technology that manages signals, track points, and train routes. Operators control the system via a computer interface, which checks route availability, track point positions, and prevents conflicting train movements before allowing trains to proceed.

The fail-safe design of the system ensures safety by placing signals in a restricted state upon fault detection, significantly reducing accident risks.

Following its successful trial operations at the Cantt Station on October 21, the CBI system is expected to be fully commissioned and operational soon at the main Lahore Railway Station. An official of the CBI project confirmed that the system has been installed at most stations from Shahdara to Lahore, with the exception of Lahore’s main station and Khanewal Railway Station.
