Game of Thrones’ Perfect Replacement is a 100+ Hours Fantasy Series that's Free on YouTube
Few shows match 'Game of Thrones' gritty high-fantasy setting. So why not watch a Critical Role D&D show instead?
For those seeking an epic fantasy experience akin to George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones, there exists a 100+ hour dark-fantasy series that can fill the void perfectly: Critical Role. This series, hosted by well-known voice actors who gather weekly to play Dungeons & Dragons, offers a unique blend of politics, skulduggery, and in-depth worldbuilding.
While not matching Game of Thrones in scale and grandeur, Critical Role's current campaign, set in the world of Aramán, shares many similarities with the beloved series. Both feature ruthless political maneuvering, characters vying for power, and an ever-present threat of death. Game of Thrones, known for its grittier fantasy, offers a darker tone where good often suffers, much like the political machinations of Campaign 4 in Aramán.
Although magic plays a significant role in Critical Role, its impact is not as prominent as in Game of Thrones. However, the loss of divine rule and fundamental shift in magic have created a power vacuum in Aramán, akin to the White Walkers in Game of Thrones. The series has already lost one player character, and with no resurrection magic, the stakes are higher than ever, making Campaign 4 a thrilling and immersive alternative to Game of Thrones.
