Fyne Audio Cubitt 5 review: an expansive-sounding, attractive stereo speaker system marred by low-rent usability
Fyne Audio’s first wireless stereo speaker system, the Cubitt 5, is priced to compete in a fiercely contested part of the market. Brave or foolhardy?
The Fyne Audio Cubitt 5 is a new pair of active stereo speakers from the company founded less than a decade ago. At first glance, the compact, well-made cabinets and range of attractive finishes give the impression that this system could compete well against rivals. The system boasts 240 watts of power and a variety of inputs, including Bluetooth with aptX HD, analog and digital options, and an HDMI ARC socket.
However, the lack of on-system controls and a remote handset that's described as unlovely detracts from the overall usability. Despite these drawbacks, once the system is up and running, its impressive performance becomes apparent. The detailed retrieval, soundstage, low-frequency response, and midrange clarity are all excellent, and it handles a wide range of music genres with ease.
While it may not be the absolute best option on the market, the Cubitt 5 offers a great value for its price point and is a strong contender in the sub-$750 wireless stereo speaker category.
