Messi receives 2026 Princesa de Asturias award for Sport

Lionel Messi has been honored with the 2026 Princesa de Asturias Award for Sport, an accolade that transcends his football achievements. The Argentine captain, speaking to Fabrizio Romano on X, shared that his father was overjoyed by the recognition and insisted they attend the ceremony, despite Messi's busy football schedule. Messi emphasized that the award signifies more than his on-pitch accomplishments, underscoring its broader importance.

"This award goes beyond what you do on the pitch or what I’ve achieved throughout my career," he stated. The Princesa de Asturias Awards honor excellence across various fields, including sport, arts, science, and international cooperation. Messi's honor adds to his extensive list of individual achievements, including multiple Ballon d'Or titles, a FIFA World Cup victory with Argentina in 2022, and significant success during his time at Barcelona.
