Experts say all high-risk groups vulnerable to haze, including those with medical conditions

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 — While haze poses health risks to the general population, medical experts say that no single high-risk group is necessarily more vulnerable than others. Susceptibility depends on factors such as age, underlying medical conditions, and the duration and intensity of exposure. Those with chronic lung diseases, heart or lung conditions, and pregnant women are advised to take precautions against haze exposure.

Dr Bala Murali Sundram, a senior medical lecturer at Universiti Malaya's Faculty of Medicine, emphasized that children below five years, older adults aged 60 and above, and pregnant women are especially susceptible. Dr Bala stated that children, especially those under five, are more vulnerable because their lungs and immune systems are still developing.

Older adults face increased risks due to age-related changes and higher prevalence of chronic diseases. Pregnant women face higher risks, with epidemiological evidence linking haze exposure to adverse birth outcomes like preterm birth and low birth weight. Diagnosing haze-related illnesses is based on symptoms, exposure, medical history, and clinical findings, according to Dr Mohamed Amin Kader, a consultant internal medicine specialist.

General practitioner Dr Boo Cheng Hau noted that most haze-related cases involve respiratory problems, including acute exacerbations of bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Children are advised to wear N95 respirators, stay indoors, and take extra precautions if they have respiratory or heart conditions.
