Ebola: FG seeking preventive measures — Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu revealed on Thursday that the Federal Government is taking preventive measures to curb the spread of diseases such as Ebola. The statement was made at the State House, Abuja, following Tinubu's oath-taking as a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians. The announcement came two days after the government confirmed its first Ebola case in Abuja.

Tinubu emphasized the continent's heightened vulnerability to such outbreaks and called for preventive actions to mitigate the impact of such diseases. He urged medical professionals to address the brain drain issue, which he believes places significant pressure on healthcare systems, limits access to essential services, and increases the workload of remaining healthcare workers.

Tinubu also commended the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, for his efforts towards health sector reforms, ensuring improved accessibility, affordability, and efficiency in healthcare. The President further highlighted the commitment of his administration to health sector reforms, pledging to continue these efforts beyond 2027.

Dr Mamadou Ka, President of the College and Chairman of its Board of Trustees, noted that the award was given to the president who has made a significant impact on health care delivery in the sub-region. The West African College of Physicians granted the fellowship only eight times in its 50-year history, with the last Nigerian recipient being General Ibrahim Babangida in 1991.
