Palghar Crime: Gutka Worth ₹49.24 Lakh Seized On Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway; Total Seizure Valued At ₹61.24 Lakh

On October 21, 2026, law enforcement in Palghar apprehended a gutka smuggling ring on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway. Police seized contraband tobacco products valued at ₹49.24 lakh, hidden within a shipment of electrical goods. The bust occurred at the Dahapchari border check post, where officers from the Talasari police station detected the illegal activity.

Alongside the seized gutkha amounting to ₹49,24,800, authorities also apprehended a vehicle, believed to be the means of transporting the prohibited substance. The total estimated value of the seized items, including the vehicle, reached ₹61,24,800. Police believe the tempo was used to disguise the illegal activity by concealing the gutkha under a cover of seemingly legitimate electrical goods.

An information tip-off led to the deployment of the Talasari police to intercept the smuggling convoy, resulting in the arrest of the driver involved. The driver has been formally charged with a criminal offense, and the case has been registered at the Talasari police station. Ongoing investigations aim to uncover the origin of the consignment and to identify any additional individuals implicated in the smuggling network.

The operation was directed by Palghar Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh. This significant seizure is part of a broader effort by the police to combat the illegal transportation of gutka from Gujarat into Maharashtra.
