Microsoft expands sovereign cloud offerings as data control concerns grow

Microsoft expanded its sovereign cloud offerings on Tuesday, adding new security, governance and AI capabilities as customers, particularly in Europe, demand greater assurance over where data is stored, who can access it and how critical services operate during disruptions. Microsoft expands sovereign cloud offerings as data control concerns grow

Microsoft is enhancing its sovereign cloud services, unveiling new security, governance, and AI features to address escalating concerns over data control, particularly in Europe. The company's cloud and AI offerings will now include a Unified Sovereign Control Panel, which will help organizations evaluate their sovereignty status, pinpoint risks, apply controls, and evaluate workload portability.

Microsoft is also expanding Azure Key Vault Managed Hardware Security Module (HSM), enabling customers to retain dedicated encryption key protection on-premises or through trusted third parties. Additionally, Azure Confidential Clean Rooms will support collaboration with sensitive data while limiting broader exposure. The company is also rolling out Azure Local, allowing customers to bring more cloud capabilities into their on-premises environments and transition workloads between connected and disconnected states.

Additionally, DocumentDB and Blob Storage will be available on Azure Local, with SQL Server on Azure Local already generally available. Microsoft's Foundry Local, which supports local inference and agentic retrieval in natural language, will also be generally available at Microsoft Ignite. While these enhancements offer enterprises greater flexibility, industry analysts caution that these localized deployments do not eliminate vendor dependency entirely.

"In the Sovereign Private Cloud, enterprises can operate infrastructure locally and even disconnect selected workloads from Azure," said Ashish Banerjee, senior principal analyst at Gartner. "However, enterprises still need to verify whether Microsoft remains involved in identity, software updates, management, or technical support for the services they use."

Despite these advancements, analysts stress that technical controls alone cannot eliminate geopolitical dependence. While Microsoft's new measures reduce risks, they cannot entirely eliminate these concerns.
