tvOS 27.2 RC Lays Groundwork for HomePod Surround Sound

Apple has seeded updates for iOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, and HomePod Software 27.2, preparing for the upcoming launch of the new Apple TV 4K model. The new updates introduce support for four-speaker surround sound on the Apple TV 4K, offering users a more immersive home theater experience.

Setting up a HomePod home theater system is now possible directly on the Apple TV, although users can also initiate the process using the Apple TV remote app on an iPhone. The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K supports the new surround sound feature, allowing users to choose from various combinations of HomePod mini 2 speakers, second-generation HomePods, or a mix of two HomePods and two HomePod mini 2 speakers.

However, it's important to note that the original HomePod and HomePod mini cannot be used for surround sound, and older Apple TV models do not support this feature. When combining HomePod speakers with an Apple TV, the speakers are grouped together as a single accessory, rather than separate audio devices. This helps the speakers detect their position in the room, enabling accurate calibration of timing and levels for optimal surround sound.

The HomePod mini 2 is set to launch on October 30, while the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K arrives on November 13. Pre-orders for both devices will be available through Apple. The iOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, and HomePod Software 27.2 updates are expected to be released the following week.
