Salaga South MP asks why Obuasi SHTS headmaster has not been arrested

The Member of Parliament for Salaga South, Zuwera Mohammed Ibrahimah, has questioned why Zakaria Abdulai, the suspended headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), has not been arrested following allegations of sexual abuse from students. During an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Monday, October 19, Madam Ibrahimah stated that the Ghana Education Service (GES) is the only action taken against him so far, while the legal process has not yet begun.

She referred to a documentary by JoyNews investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, which allegedly contains an admission that could warrant his arrest.

Madam Ibrahimah expressed her concern about the lack of response from various authorities, including the regional and municipal directors of education and local government officials, to the petition raised by the affected girls. She emphasized the failure to protect the students and called for a closer examination of how schools deal with sexual abuse allegations. The MP acknowledged the bravery of the students in speaking out and seeking justice, despite the absence of support from adults and authorities.

As of October 14, the number of students accusing the headmaster has increased to 19. On the same day, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu directed the GES to suspend Abdulai and asked the police CID headquarters to investigate the matter.
