Construction of Phase 1 of Islamabad Model Prison, a Rs7 billion facility situated in Sector H-16, has been completed. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to officially open the jail soon. The 90-acre prison can house 1,000 inmates, with three barracks already constructed. Upon completion, all prisoners from Islamabad's Adiala Jail will be transferred. There's a chance Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), may also move to the new facility.
Phase 1 includes the superintendent's residence and 12 flats for officers, along with a three-storey staff barracks. A 32-bed hospital, two watchtowers, 34 security posts, an administrative block, and a kitchen have been completed. Capital Development Authority (CDA) staff will manage the hospital. Cleaning is taking place at the site.
Sohail Ashraf, Chairman of CDA and chief commissioner of Islamabad, visited the prison to assess progress and ensure the project meets standards. The next phase of the project is planned for later.
