Danish container shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk is examining the feasibility of nuclear-powered ships for regular port calls, with a focus on safety, regulatory compliance and security. The company, the world's second-largest by capacity, collaborated with Lloyd's Register and reactor maker Core Power in 2024 to study the regulatory pathways for a fourth-generation nuclear-powered container vessel.

The study centered on a smaller feeder ship and concluded that the main challenges lie in regulatory and governance matters, such as port safety procedures, emergency preparedness and liability.

While Maersk has not committed to deploying nuclear-powered vessels, the inquiry is expanding to the US-UK route, dubbed the "Pink Corridor." The project, announced in September, will study security, nuclear safeguards, cyber resilience, emergency response and regulatory alignment between maritime and nuclear authorities. The U.S. government is also showing interest in commercial maritime nuclear power, with the Department of Energy and classification society ABS joining the inquiry.
