Gold Fields Calls For End To Menopause Stigma, Urges Support For Breast Cancer Patients

A Breast Health and Menopause Awareness Forum organised by Gold Fields Ghana Limited highlighted the need for greater understanding and support for women facing breast cancer and menopause. Health professionals warned that misconceptions, emotional distress and inadequate workplace assistance could impair women's well-being, confidence and productivity.

Dr Magdalene Bakari, Lead Specialist for Health Services at Gold Fields Ghana Limited, stressed that menopause should not be treated as an illness or cause for discrimination, emphasizing that hormonal changes during menopause can significantly impact physical and mental health. She urged employers to implement practical workplace adjustments such as flexible schedules, appropriate dress codes, access to water and cooler work environments to aid women during their menopausal transition.

Dr Vida Badu Oppong, a psychologist, stressed that psychological support should be available to breast cancer patients from diagnosis through treatment and recovery, and that employers should establish employee assistance programmes to provide psychological care and help workers manage emotional effects and return to work comfortably.

Dr Annabel Amina Bawah, a gynaecologist, called for early detection of breast cancer to improve treatment outcomes, stressing that recognition and compassion are essential for people diagnosed with the disease.
