Lucknow: The Yogi government is intensifying efforts to bolster jail security across the state through a blend of technological advancements and traditional strengthening measures. Over the past few months, a significant upgrade in jail surveillance has taken place, with the state's prisons now housing more than 7,000 CCTV cameras.
This massive increase in camera coverage was reported by the Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, P.C. Meena, who emphasized the government's commitment to making jail security both technologically sophisticated and administratively streamlined.
The use of AI-based technology, specifically the JARVIS system, has been introduced to augment the surveillance capabilities of the existing CCTV network. Over 750 of these intelligent cameras are directly linked to the state headquarters control room, ensuring a centralized monitoring capability. Besides, an electric fence has been installed around the perimeter of jails to fortify external security, complementing the internal measures implemented through the CCTV surveillance.
Yogi government's aim is to create a multi-layered security framework that combines various surveillance methods and perimeter defenses to minimize security risks.
Further enhancing operational efficiency, the state has initiated the implementation of the e-Prisons Early Release Processing Module, marking it as the first state to adopt this digital solution. This platform facilitates the prompt and transparent processing of cases seeking premature release, thereby reducing the time required for such decisions.
In addition to technological interventions, the government is also working on streamlining administrative procedures within the jail system, aiming for paperless operations to promote transparency and efficiency.
To facilitate easier and safer judicial processes, Video Conferencing units are being established in every jail, enabling inmates to interact with court authorities remotely. In a bid to embrace sustainable energy practices, solar installations are underway, including the installation of solar panels on jail rooftops and the deployment of solar high-mast lights in 58 jails.
Moreover, digital libraries have been set up in 74 jails, providing inmates with a wealth of digital reading materials, thus promoting continuous learning and knowledge enhancement during their incarceration.
