Many times, we ignore the obvious connections. This ignorance harms your life. One such connection many women don’t realise is between gut health and gynaecology. PCOS, Periods And Digestion: Understanding The Gut-Health Connection

Many women overlook the connection between gut health and gynaecology, which can have serious consequences. Gut health impacts several aspects of female reproductive health through immune, metabolic, and hormonal pathways. The gut-vagina axis refers to this link.

The gut microbiome plays a role in nutrient metabolism, immune regulation, and processing hormones like estrogen. Hormonal changes can alter both gut and vaginal environments, creating a bidirectional relationship. The vaginal microbiome is an independent ecosystem, with Lactobacillus species producing lactic acid and maintaining acidity that inhibits overgrowth of other organisms.

Studies have linked changes in the gut or vaginal microbiome to conditions like bacterial vaginosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, and endometriosis. These findings suggest that gut imbalance could contribute to these issues, though research is ongoing.

Obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr. Gayathri Kamath explains that gastrointestinal issues such as constipation, bloating, and altered bowel habits can become more prominent around menstruation due to hormonal fluctuations. Some women with PCOS or endometriosis may experience digestive symptoms alongside their gynaecological issues.

To promote gut and gynaecological health, a healthy diet rich in fibre from vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds is recommended. Incorporate fibre gradually, stay hydrated, and engage in regular exercise. Probiotic-rich foods like curd, yoghurt, and fermented items can be beneficial when tolerated.

Do not dismiss persistent symptoms like bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, pelvic pain, irregular periods, or unusual vaginal discharge. If these issues persist, consult a healthcare professional. Maintain healthy menstrual hygiene by using warm or room temperature water, unscented soap, and cotton underwear.

Lifestyle changes are crucial. Manage stress and anxiety through yoga, meditation, and physical activities like walking after meals. Prioritize seven to eight hours of quality sleep each night. Be cautious with over-the-counter medications, as some may disrupt the balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut or vagina.
