MCP vs API: When You Need Which, With Real Benchmarks

I built the same small service as a REST API and as a stateless MCP server and measured latency, throughput, bytes and the tokens a model has to read. The original, with any updates, lives on fabwaseem.com . MCP vs API is not really a choice between two rival technologies. An API (usually REST) is how software talks to your service: your code calls known endpoints. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is…

The difference between MCP (Model Context Protocol) and an API (Application Programming Interface) lies in who controls the interaction. An API is a contract for programs, with fixed endpoints documented ahead of time, called by code developed by a programmer. MCP, on the other hand, is a contract for AI applications. It allows a model to discover and decide at runtime which tools to use, based on the service's defined tools, descriptions, and JSON Schemas. In simpler terms, an API is controlled by the developer, while MCP is controlled by the AI model.

MCP was developed by Anthropic in November 2024 and later donated to the Agentic AI Foundation in December 2025. It is widely adopted by AI applications such as Claude, Cursor, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, VS Code, and ChatGPT. The MCP tools specification explicitly states that tools in MCP are designed to be model-controlled, meaning the model can discover and invoke tools automatically.

An MCP server is essentially an API wrapper, but with added features. It provides a standard way to list tools, a standard call format, tool annotations (like read-only or destructive), and an OAuth 2.1 flow that every MCP client understands. However, MCP does not include business logic; it merely wraps your existing services or REST APIs. The MCP server validates input arguments and forwards calls to your service or API.

In terms of performance, a REST API might offer faster latency (76 µs) and higher throughput (66,486 requests per second) compared to an MCP server (424 µs and 4,595 requests per second) when measured in a test on a single Node process. However, whether to use MCP or an API depends on the calling party. Use a REST API when your own code is the caller, such as web and mobile apps, cron jobs, webhooks, or service-to-service calls.

Add an MCP server when AI clients you don't control (like Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, VS Code, or Copilot) should use your service, or when the model must pick tools at runtime. Most products will benefit from both, with the MCP server wrapping the API.
