IIT Bombay Student Sahil Wakode's Parents Taken To Azad Maidan Police Station As Cops Clear Month-Long Protest Site

Mumbai Police apprehended Sahil Wakode's parents, Ravindra and Sonali Wakode, at the Azad Maidan police station on Sunday, a month after their son's suicide. The couple had come to the IIT Bombay campus to pay respects to their son on the first anniversary of his death. Police sources explained that the Wakodes were taken to Azad Maidan police station around 4 pm and departed for home at 6 pm.

DCP Manish Kalwania confirmed that protests are prohibited at Azad Maidan on Saturdays and Sundays, but the Wakode family was granted permission to protest on Monday at a designated site. Prior to the parents' arrival, about ten students were detained at the protest site and later released. During the clearance of the site, 16 students were reportedly forcefully removed in a police van; however, they were subsequently released.

The protest had been ongoing near the institute's main gate for a month following Sahil's death on September 18, as students and his family sought answers from the institute regarding the circumstances surrounding his demise.
