HMWSSB to launch green water tanker services from November 1
Private STP registrations extended till Oct 25
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) will launch green water tanker services starting November 1. Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy instructed the IT department to hasten the creation of an online booking system for green water tankers and conduct a trial run by October 20. The service aims to provide treated sewage water for non-drinking purposes including construction, landscaping and gardening.
Reddy emphasized the importance of rigorous quality control at sewage treatment plants (STPs), directing officials to examine treatment procedures, laboratory results and water quality data. To meet demand, HMWSSB intends to expand its current fleet of 1,200 tankers by adding 500 more. The Board will collaborate with HMDA, GHMC, HYDRAA and other relevant organizations to carry out this expansion.
In addition to the existing tankers, HMWSSB plans to increase its capacity and set up new filling stations, along with installing meters to monitor treated water supply. Moreover, the Board plans to tap alternative water sources in Ghatkesar, Keesara and other regions of Malkajgiri, and evaluate the availability from Manjira and Singur reservoirs.
Private sewage treatment plants within HMWSSB's jurisdiction are required to register by October 25 with 61 out of an estimated 600 plants already registered. This initiative aims to alleviate pressure on drinking water resources during the summer by encouraging the use of treated water for various non-drinking purposes, with priority given to surplus water from private STPs.
