France’s Macron condemns ‘unbridled violence’ amid new wave of clashes

French President Emmanuel Macron denounced the "shocking" acts of violence that erupted across France during protests over rising living costs on Sunday. In a televised address, he expressed his disbelief and anger at the "dissenters" who looted and vandalized cities, questioning their motives and the reasoning behind their actions. "Nothing justifies it, nothing explains it, nothing excuses it," Macron stated firmly.

The president has ordered a review to assess any potential shortcomings in intelligence gathering or police readiness prior to the protests that turned violent. Prefects and mayors have been given the authority to prohibit specific gatherings if deemed necessary. Macron has also called for a gathering of students, teachers, lawmakers, trade union representatives, and business leaders this week to discuss concrete measures in addressing the current crisis. He emphasized the importance of coming together to find solutions.
