E-Commerce Bill to be tabled next year to regulate online transactions, says deputy minister

KUALA LUMPUR, October 18 — The E-Commerce Bill will be introduced in Parliament during the first session of the upcoming year to enhance the regulation of online transactions, announced Deputy Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Fuziah Salleh. The initial draft of the Bill has been finalized and is currently undergoing revisions ahead of its presentation.

"Currently, there is no specific legislation governing e-commerce," she explained during a press conference following the conclusion of the Retail Access Programme 2026 at a local hotel. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his budget speech on October 9, stated that the E-Commerce Bill will be tabled during the next parliamentary meeting to bolster accountability among online platforms and vendors.

According to Fuziah, the Retail Access Programme, which combines training sessions and business matchmaking, has assisted 1,862 entrepreneurs since 2023 up until October of this year. The programme consists of 38 training series and 21 business matching series, engaging 103 local brands and 552 stock-keeping units (SKUs). This initiative enables entrepreneurs to showcase their products and grasp the requirements set by supermarkets, thereby identifying prospects to join the retail network, she added.
