Chwalinska fights back to win Wuhan Open for maiden WTA title

In a thrilling match at the Wuhan Open, Poland's Maja Chwalinska emerged victorious, claiming her maiden WTA title with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Britain's Sonay Kartal. The 16th seed faced a significant challenge, trailing by a set and a break before turning her fortunes around to become just the fourth player to win her first tour-level title at a WTA 1000 event. Chwalinska, ranked 146 in the world at the start of the year, stunned expectations by reaching the French Open final as a qualifier earlier in the season.

Kartal, who had been sidelined for six months due to a spinal stress fracture, entered the tournament ranked 170 in the world but will return to the top 50 following her triumph in Wuhan. The Polish left-hander dominated the first set, with Kartal utilizing her powerful groundstrokes to establish a one-set lead. However, Chwalinska showed remarkable resilience in the second set, employing effective strategies to apply pressure on Kartal's serve.

She extended rallies, covered every ball with precision, and mixed up her shots with her smooth touch.

Despite saving 10 out of 13 break points and taking an early 2-0 advantage in the second set, Kartal ultimately succumbed to Chwalinska's persistence. The Polish player broke twice to secure her third championship point, clinching the victory after a grueling two-hour and 43-minute contest. Chwalinska's remarkable feat has propelled her to a career-high ranking of No. 11 in the world, marking the beginning of her top-20 debut when the new rankings are released on Monday.
