Best Places to Live in Kenya for Expats 2026

For American expats, the best place to live in Ghana is Accra, specifically its gated districts of East Legon, Airport Residential, and Cantonments. According to the US State Department, Ghana is rated Level 2 for safety, advising Americans to exercise increased caution due to violent crime, limited medical services, and violence against women.

The northern regions of Ghana are rated higher for safety concerns. The top three districts in Accra are chosen based on safety warnings, services, medical access, and entry rules. The US State Department recommends considering Accra's eastern districts, Osu and Labone, Kumasi, and Cape Coast for expats. Emergency medical services outside Accra are limited, making the capital region the most practical base for newcomers.

Entry into Ghana requires an electronic visa, which can be obtained from the Ghana Immigration Service portal launched on May 25, 2026, for a fee of US$260. Safety is a concern in Ghana, with violent crime such as carjacking and street mugging occurring, particularly after dark. East Legon, Airport Residential, and Cantonments are ranked first due to their gated compounds, proximity to Kotoka International Airport, and availability of international schools and clinics.

Osu and Labone rank second for their vibrant nightlife, restaurants, and the beach at Labadi. The ranking is based on the US State Department advisory, the availability of services, and how property portals describe each area. There is no specific crime rate data available for individual Accra districts, so the ranking is based on advisory information and service accessibility.
