AI ‘in your pocket’ could help save lives as Andalucia tests new tool for 061 emergency crews

Emergency crews in Andalucia are testing a new AI tool called SAVE-EM, or Support Assistant for Vital Emergencies — Enhanced Memory, to help them access critical medical information quickly. The system, developed by professionals at Andalucia’s Centro de Emergencias Sanitarias (CES) 061, uses generative AI to allow healthcare professionals to ask questions in natural language, either written or spoken, and retrieve relevant information.

It is intended to support, rather than replace, doctors and paramedics by making approved procedures and medical guidance easier to access while treating patients. Andalucia’s 061 service works with over 100 standardized processes and handles more than 1.5 million requests annually, with emergency units attending over 65,000 patients annually, 80 percent of whom are classified as maximum priority.

The project, which began in Malaga, aims to help emergency crews assess symptoms, calculate medication doses, and decide on the best procedures to follow, even in difficult terrain or when documentation is not easily accessible. SAVE-EM is designed to be reliable, recognizing when it lacks sufficient information to provide a reliable response.

It will be tested with around 130 questions and advanced simulations before any real-world deployment, expected in December 2026.
