In a world where prices for streaming hardware have skyrocketed, Walmart’s $60 Onn 4K Pro streamer with Google TV could be the last good deal. This device, launched earlier this year, has proven to be a reliable performer and offers excellent value for money.
When compared to its direct competitor, the Google TV Streamer, the Onn 4K Pro holds its own. Both devices run on virtually the same software, with Google’s version receiving updates and new features more frequently. The primary difference lies in the RAM, with Google’s streamer boasting 4GB compared to Walmart’s 3GB. However, this slight difference rarely impacts performance.
One aspect where Walmart’s streamer shines is its remote control. It is more comfortable and backlit, making it easier to use in a dark room at night. While the addition of a "Free TV" button is a bit unnecessary, the overall design and functionality of the remote are satisfactory. The backlit feature is particularly useful in low-light conditions.
The device itself is unassuming, featuring a fabric top and a footprint similar to other streaming boxes. While the fabric top may not be ideal for spill-prone environments, it is otherwise easy to use and maintain. Power is supplied via USB-C, a significant improvement over the previous generation’s barrel plug design.
The Onn 4K Pro is priced at just $60, making it an attractive option in an otherwise expensive streaming market. However, the biggest challenge users face is finding the device in stock. Despite consistent availability in stores and online, stock may vary depending on location and purchasing time.
For those who can’t find the Pro, Walmart also offers the Onn 4K Plus dongle, priced at $50. This alternative matches the Pro in most ways, although it lacks the Ethernet port, USB-A port, and slightly reduced performance. Ultimately, the Onn 4K Pro stands out as a dependable and cost-effective streaming solution in a market dominated by expensive options.
