American tennis player Madison Keys faced criticism for her fans' reaction to merchandise at the Wuhan Open. The merchandise displayed a scorecard featuring the players' performance from the US Open, which Madison Keys lost in the third round. Fans deemed the merch disrespectful towards the Australian Open champion Madison Keys, expressing disappointment in the Wuhan Open for distributing what they called "tacky" items.
One fan suggested suing the tournament if they were in Keys' position. The Wuhan Open was initially to be headlined by Zheng, who later withdrew due to a shoulder injury.
