Protesters across France rally over rising living costs, joining students' grievances

Across France, protesters called for street demonstrations on Saturday against increasing living expenses, joining students advocating for better educational conditions following a prolonged school blockade lasting over three weeks. This mobilization came after social media pleas to reinstate the yellow vest movement, which arose in 2018 to address social injustice.

Student groups, who have been protesting since mid-September, urged supporters to join their cause. The CGT, one of France's prominent labor unions, endorsed the protests, demanding higher wages and pensions, reduced prices, and the safeguarding of public services that fulfill citizens' needs.

President Emmanuel Macron urged the populace on Friday to maintain peace and respect for individuals and property, warning of potential violence. In Brussels, Macron stated, "There is a constitutional right to protest and to express oneself, and I have always been vigilant and attentive that that right is fully respected." However, he emphasized that this right entails the obligation to respect others' well-being and possessions, urging demonstrators not to insult or damage property.
