Protesters across France rally over rising living costs, joining students' grievances

Paris — Across France, protesters called for demonstrations on Saturday over increasing living expenses, aligning with grievances expressed by high school students regarding education conditions for over three weeks following school blockades. The recent mobilization was prompted by social media calls to rekindle the yellow vest movement, which arose in 2018 to challenge social injustice.

High school groups have been advocating for support since mid-September, encouraging others to join the cause. The CGT, a prominent French labor union, endorsed the protests, demanding higher wages and pensions, reduced prices, and the preservation of public services that effectively address societal needs. President Emmanuel Macron urged calm and respect for people and property on Friday, warning of potential violence.

"There is a constitutional right to protest and to express oneself, and I have always been vigilant and attentive that that right is fully respected," Macron stated in Brussels. "But this right comes with the need to respect. Respect for people, respect for property, and therefore a commitment not to insult or destroy."
