Melaka polls: PKR to field experienced, young and women candidates - Amirudin

PKR, a major political party in Malaysia, has announced its strategy for the upcoming 16th Melaka state election to be held on November 14. The party plans to field a diverse group of candidates, including seasoned and experienced individuals, young people, and women from various ethnic backgrounds. PKR's vice-president, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, emphasized that these candidates should possess the necessary qualities and capabilities to serve their communities and help secure victory in the respective constituencies.

Amirudin further explained that in certain state constituencies where PKR's support is relatively low, the party will allow candidates to gain additional experience prior to the election. This approach aligns with the long-term plan of PKAN (Pakatan Harapan), the coalition of which PKR is a part.

When asked about potential cooperation with other parties, Amirudin stated that a decision would be made within the next one to two weeks. The PKR secretary-general, Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh, revealed that the party will contest nine seats in the Melaka state election. The final list of candidates will be announced by PKR president, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who also serves as the chairman of the People's Justice Party (PH), on October 24.

The Election Commission has set November 14 as the polling day for the Melaka state polls, with early voting on November 10 and nomination day on October 31. Historically, Melaka has had 28 state assembly seats, with the Barisan Nasional (BN) party winning 21 seats in the previous election, PH securing five seats, and Perikatan Nasional (PN) taking the remaining two.
