Malaysia records 5,278 domestic violence cases, with numbers still climbing, says Nancy Shukri (VIDEO)

KUCHING, Oct 17 — Malaysia reported 5,278 domestic violence cases in 2026, with the number still increasing, according to Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. The ministry is focusing on counseling and women's empowerment to help women understand their rights, boost their confidence, and achieve financial independence.

"Financial independence empowers women, making them more confident in defending themselves and decreasing their tolerance for abuse," Nancy informed reporters at the EmpowerUS 2026 seminar at the Sarawak State Library.

Nancy also addressed a recent case in Negeri Sembilan where a 35-year-old female customs officer was allegedly killed by her husband. The ministry is currently exploring ways to provide support to the victim's family and children. "We are preparing assistance, especially for the children and the victim's family," she stated, noting that the ministry is still prepared to help families in need.

In July and August, 632 domestic violence cases were recorded each month, surpassing the 601 cases reported in June. However, the figures were still lower than the 766 cases in April, the highest monthly total in 2026. Talian Kasih, a helpline service, received 104,784 calls as of October 2026, exceeding the 98,050 calls in 2025.

Nancy explained that the surge in calls showed increased public awareness of the service and the help it offers. "Even children know what to do. It's not just for abuse; it's also for those facing family problems and requiring assistance," she added.
