I Built SpeedPulse: An Open-Source Internet Speed Tester with ASP.NET Core 10 and TypeScript

I Built SpeedPulse: An Open-Source Internet Speed Tester with ASP.NET Core 10 and TypeScript After working on its testing interface, diagnostics, backend, and release pipeline, I'm excited to introduce SpeedPulse v1.0.0 , the first stable release of my open-source internet speed testing project. I am pleased to announce the launch of SpeedPulse v1.0.0, the inaugural stable iteration of my open-source internet speed monitoring tool. SpeedPulse is a browser-based application designed to measure connection performance by analyzing download and upload throughput, HTTP latency, approximate jitter, and any failed HTTP probe tests. These measurements are accompanied by interactive charts and a record of previous results. You can experience it firsthand on GitHub Pages at https://sanskarin.github.io/SpeedPulse/.

Key features of SpeedPulse v1.0.0 include:

1. Connection speed testing: Users can view download and upload speed estimations, HTTP latency and approximate jitter, and monitor failed HTTP probes. Keep in mind these are browser-level estimates, not laboratory-grade or packet-level measurements.

2. Interactive dashboard: The application provides visualizations to explore connection performance. Users have the option to export their results as CSV files for sharing their measurements.

3. Developer Labs: This section of SpeedPulse includes diagnostic utilities such as backend health checks, HTTP probe testing, browser capability reporting, diagnostic exports, and labeled simulations. Its main goal is to facilitate network behavior analysis and understanding.

4. Deployment options: SpeedPulse offers two deployment methods - a hosted web version using GitHub Pages, which employs a static frontend and public Cloudflare testing endpoints, or a self-hosted version utilizing an optional ASP.NET Core 10 backend. The self-hosted option provides local HTTP testing endpoints, health and configuration APIs, bounded transfers, and request limiting.

It is crucial to note that tests conducted against a server running on the same computer evaluate the local loopback path instead of your internet service provider's speed.

For improved reliability in this release, I have addressed several issues. Previously, an upload failure could interrupt the user experience even after earlier measurements had been successful. In the stable release, completed measurements are now preserved, and unavailable upload results are appropriately marked rather than treated as zero. Additionally, I have corrected live chart behavior and added regression coverage for these scenarios.

To download SpeedPulse v1.0.0, you can access the following files:

- Static web archive

- Self-hosted ASP.NET Core packages for Windows x64, Linux x64, and Apple Silicon macOS

The release can be found on GitHub at https://github.com/sanskarIN/SpeedPulse/releases/tag/v1.0.0. The source code is available at https://github.com/sanskarIN/SpeedPulse. The live application is accessible at https://sanskarin.github.io/SpeedPulse/.

Looking ahead, I plan to further enhance measurement reliability, developer diagnostics, usability, and testing across various environments. As SpeedPulse is open source under the MIT License, I welcome contributions and technical feedback. If you choose to explore SpeedPulse, I would particularly appreciate your insights regarding browser compatibility, any unexpected measurement behavior, or suggestions for enhancing the diagnostic utility. Thank you for your interest in SpeedPulse!

When a cert-manager Keystore Runs Behind a Password Change

cert-manager v1.21.2's API reference: "The keystore file will be updated immediately." After a password change, the keystores opened only with the old password throughout our 30-minute window.

  • Cert-manager v1.21.2 has keystore password change issue
  • Keystore entries remain encrypted for 30 minutes post-change
  • Certificate stays Ready=True, but entries stay encrypted

Node.js Marketplace Verification: 6 Secure SMS OTP Login Flow Lockout and Replay Defenses

Short answer: design a secure SMS OTP login flow by putting rate limiting, retry control, lockout, and replay protection in your Node.js backend, before and after the provider call.

  • Implement six security gates before provider call in Node.js OTP flow
  • Seller requests vehicle service report, backend enforces defenses
  • Protect provider call with idempotency key and exponential backoff

Database Indexing – Part 1: How Indexes Help Find Data Faster

Recently, I was reading two books: Good Vibes, Good Life and The Mountain Is You . I usually forget things after some time 😅. So whenever I want to revisit something I've read, I go back to the book.

  • Database indexing improves data retrieval speed
  • PostgreSQL uses indexes to locate records quickly
  • Index Only Scan retrieves data directly from index
