A luxury Land Rover Discovery, originally stolen in the United Kingdom, was recovered by Kenyan detectives during Operation Carback II, a nationwide crackdown on motor vehicle theft syndicates. The grey vehicle, with UK registration number KCY 001J, was seized in Nairobi's Northern Bypass as part of the week-long, multi-agency operation.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) traced the vehicle through the INTERPOL database, which confirmed its UK theft. The seized car was impounded and transported to DCI headquarters for further investigation. The operation, coordinated by the DCI and INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau in Nairobi, involved collaboration with various agencies such as the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and law enforcement bodies like the Kenya Police Service and Administration Police Service.
The operation's scope extended beyond Nairobi, with efforts targeting motor vehicle yards, showrooms, and bazaars across several regions. In another incident, a white Mercedes-Benz Kompressor with registration number KBZ 325J was found, leading investigators to suspect a discrepancy in the vehicle’s registration. In Embakasi, detectives recovered a forklift with registration number KAD 132K, whose chassis number had been tampered with.
The DCI remains committed to international cooperation in combating motor vehicle theft and recovering stolen property.
