Ashton O'Rourke shines in Berne Union football win over Knights
Ashton O'Rourke ran for two scores, and Dillan Cornell added two pick sixes in Berne Union's 32-0 victory.
On a chilly fall Friday night at Berne Union High School, Rockets senior Ashton O’Rourke delivered a spectacular performance in his final game before a home crowd. O’Rourke, who initially played receiver, took over the quarterback position for the third consecutive game, stepping in for the injured Carson Kiger. He showcased his athletic prowess by throwing three completions out of four attempts, running for 148 yards and two touchdowns, and intercepting a pass on defense.
His contributions led Berne Union to a commanding 32-0 victory over Fairfield Christian, keeping the Rockets undefeated in Mid-State League play.
Coach Tony Hurps praised O’Rourke's impact, noting that he has become a "two-headed monster" with quarterback Carson Kiger, opening up new offensive possibilities. O’Rourke's versatility added a fresh dimension to the team's playbook. The Rockets began the game strong, with James Hocking rushing 43 yards on their second play. Less than two minutes into the game, O’Rourke added to the lead by rushing 38 yards for a touchdown, making it 6-0.
Later, Dillan Cornell had two pick-sixes in the first half, each leading to a 20-0 halftime score for Berne Union. The Knights made a halftime quarterback change, but Berne Union's defense remained unyielding, forcing two tackles-for-loss and a sack on fourth down. Hocking finished with 163 rushing yards on 15 carries, and Colton Moore had two sacks and two tackles-for-loss. The Rockets will face Bishop Rosecrans in Week 10, aiming to secure a postseason spot.
