University of Ghana to reopen October 19 after GAUA suspends strike

The University of Ghana has announced its return to academic operations for the 2026/2027 academic year, set to commence on October 19. This decision was made in response to the suspension of a strike by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA). The reopening schedule was detailed in a notice issued on October 16, 2026, by the University, stating that students will start reporting to their respective halls of residence from that date.

Lectures are slated to begin on October 26. Professor Gordon A. Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, announced this decision following a meeting of the Business and Executive Committee on October 16. The University's reopening will involve the random allocation of beds on October 16, while orientation for incoming students will be conducted from October 21 to 23.

The administration has urged all students to settle their fees and complete their registration through the designated online portals, STS or DiGradsys, to facilitate a seamless reopening and the start of classes. The University's return to normalcy comes after the GAUA strike was suspended, which had previously disrupted academic activities at the institution.
