GAUA members to resume duty on October 19 after strike suspension

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) announced on Thursday, October 16 that its members will resume official duties starting Monday, October 19, 2026, following a suspension of their ongoing strike. The National Executive Committee (NEC) of GAUA reviewed the industrial action at an emergency meeting and decided to halt the strike with immediate effect. GAUA stated in a circular to its members that "All members are hereby directed to resume official duties effective Monday 19th October 2026."

The strike was initiated due to concerns over disparities in remuneration and allowances for university staff, with the union advocating for more equitable conditions of service for non-teaching personnel. The dispute had raised apprehensions about the smooth functioning of administrative operations in public universities, where administrators play a vital role in supporting academic activities and managing daily affairs. Despite the government addressing 80% of GAUA's demands, certain issues remain unresolved.

GAUA is committed to continuing negotiations with the relevant authorities to resolve the outstanding grievances and strive for a comprehensive settlement. The union expects to resume its discussions with the authorities following the commencement of official duties on October 19.
