Shashi Kapoor offered newcomer Shekhar Suman Utsav with Rekha, Amitabh: ‘Unprecedented’

Novice actor Shekhar Suman recalls his unexpected rise in Bollywood thanks to a chance offer from legendary actor Shashi Kapoor. In a conversation with The Lallantop, Suman revealed he had only been in Mumbai for 15 days when Kapoor approached him to star in Utsav, a film also featuring Rekha. Despite having no prior Bollywood experience, Kapoor saw potential in the young actor and offered him the lead role.

Suman, who had trained at the Sri Ram Centre for Performing Arts, was stunned by the offer, as he had heard countless stories about the difficulties actors faced in securing roles. Kapoor further surprised Suman by revealing that Rekha would be his leading lady. After an intense selection process involving 400 actors, Suman was ultimately chosen for the role that would kickstart his career.

Utsav, directed by Girish Karnad and produced by Kapoor, was based on the Sanskrit play Mrichchhakatika and received critical acclaim. Although it did not perform well commercially, the film marked the beginning of Suman's successful journey in the Hindi film industry.
