Ruto outlines plan to turn Kerio Valley into economic hub with Sh4.4b project

President William Ruto highlighted the impact of government investments in infrastructure, stating that the transformation of conflict-prone Kerio Valley was underway. Speaking in Sigor town, Ruto showcased the 35-kilometre Kopasi River-Lomut-Sigor-Marich Pass road project, which is 60% complete. The project will bolster connectivity between West Pokot, Turkana, Baringo and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties. It will also reduce the journey to Lodwar by 70 kilometres and cut travel time by over two hours.

Beyond road improvements, Ruto emphasized the value of irrigation, electricity connectivity and modern markets, which are already establishing the region as a burgeoning economic hub. He remarked that security concerns had waned as residents tapped into new commercial opportunities. Ruto noted that land values in the area had surged over tenfold due to government development initiatives.

Government investments include the Turkwel irrigation project, which will cover 50,000 acres, along with a Sh2.6 billion allocation for West Pokot County to bring electricity to 10,000 households through the Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Programme.

Moreover, Ruto urged parents to take advantage of education sector reforms to secure better opportunities for their children. He also inaugurated the Sh147 million Sigor Modern Market in Pokot Central Constituency, which is 47% complete. The market will generate employment for over 100 young people, with specialized fabrication works reserved for local artisans.

Ruto stressed that these developments were part of broader government efforts to enhance local trading infrastructure and improve the well-being of communities affected by insecurity.
